Low-Income Rate Assistance
- SMUD has a new program to help with the payment of overdue utility bills for eligible low-income families. The program has already started and will be available through September 13—or when the funding runs out, whichever is sooner. Eligibility criteria for this program is based on factors such as being low income with a minor child in the home, income level at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, having a past due SMUD bill in resident's name at their address of record and being a citizen of the United States or meeting certain citizenship requirements. All applicants must be SMUD customers receiving EAPR (Energy Assistance Program Rate) who are not currently disconnected from service. Call the Department of Human Assistance Information line at (916) 875-1355.
- Energy Assistance Program Rate (EAPR)
Qualifying low-income customers receive a discount of more than 30 percent off their monthly energy bill. Applications are available on the website or call 1-888-742-7683.
- Medical Equipment Discount Rate
The MED Rate discount program is designed to help customers who have higher electricity costs from running certain energy-intensive medical equipment. To qualify for the $15 monthly MED Rate discount, a full-time resident of your household must have a medical requirement certified by a licensed physician. The MED Rate covers:
- In-home dialysis cycler
- Electric wheelchair
- Oxygen concentrator
- Extraordinary heating or air-conditioning needs for people with conditions such as paraplegia, quadriplegia or multiple sclerosis.
Emergency Charitable Assistance
Donated funds are distributed to customers in need through four charities: The Salvation Army, Sacramento Food Bank Services, Travelers Aid and Folsom Cordova Community Partnership. Qualified recipients can receive assistance of up to $200 a year toward unpaid balances on their SMUD bill.
