Georgia LIHEAP to Benefit from Marketer Fine

Shell Energy Services, a natural gas marketer serving Georgia's deregulated market, will pay the price for switching customers' natural gas provider without their authority.

According to Georgia's Public Services Commission (PSC), Shell Energy will contribute $50,000 to Georgia's low-income home energy assistance program.

It will also give refunds to 18 consumers who were switched without proper authorization. Those consumers will also receive an additional $100 each.

Lastly, Shell Energy is mandated to pay 516 additional customers $50 each for misinformation. The PSC says the charges of switching stem from a telemarketing campaign by Shell Energy services in 2003.

It is not the first time a gas company's misdeeds have resulted in extra funding for Georgia's LIHEAP. The PSC levied fines against other gas marketers in July and September of 2003 and in January 2004.
