HHS Announces Distribution of Second Quarter LIHEAP Funds

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced grants of $545 million to help low-income citizens with their heating bills. The funds represent grants to states for the second quarter of the fiscal year for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Today's grants bring the total amount given to states under LIHEAP for this fiscal year to $1.38 billion. Grants were provided to all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Native American and Alaska tribes.

The second quarter allotments were calculated, based on $1.7 billion. The Administration's budget request for LIHEAP remains at $1.4 billion in regular LIHEAP block grants for FY 2003.

The Administration has not come out with a formal change in position from the $1.4 billion proposal. The goal is to have the FY 2003 appropriations bills finished by the State of the Union at the end of January.
