Detroit Edison Offers Discount For Low Income Customers

As many as 300,000 low-income Detroit Edison customers may be eligible for a short term reduction in their monthly electric rates this winter under the company's new Low Income Energy Assistance rate reduction program.

Proposed by Detroit Edison and authorized by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), the Low Income Energy Assistance program will provide eligible customers with a one cent per kilowatt hour reduction in current electric rates -- a discount of approximately $6 a month for a typical customer. The program will be implemented immediately, and is expected to extend through the current heating season.

Residential electric customers whose household income does not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible for Detroit Edison's Low Income Energy Assistance program. Other customers, including those who receive assistance from the Family Independence Agency, Supplemental Security Income, Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Food Stamps or Medicaid, may also qualify for the program.

Customers already enrolled in an energy assistance program with Detroit Edison, or those who have provided the company with approved low-income documentation within the last 18 months, will automatically receive the Low Income Energy Assistance credit. Other Detroit Edison customers who believe they are eligible for the program must provide the following information: their DTE Energy electric account number, household income information and Social Security numbers for themselves and their dependents. This information can be sent by fax to 1-800-297-6719, by e-mail to energy credit@dteenergy.com or by visiting a DTE Energy credit center.

Customers with additional questions can contact the company at 1-800-477-4747.
