TANF Families Get Additional Assistance in LA

Eligible households in Louisiana can receive a one-time $400 energy assistance payment through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Energy Assistance Program, which runs through August 30, 2002. Families and individuals can use the payment for utility deposits, overdue utility bills, reconnection/disconnection fees, current or future utility bills. Payments cover electric, gas, propane or wood services.

In order to be eligible, households must have an income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level; have legal guardianship of a minor child (18 or under) who resides in the home with the applicant; have an established utility account at the address shown on the bill; and demonstrate self-sufficiency by providing evidence of either current employment or current enrollment in educational classes or job-related skills training.

This is the second year in a row that Louisiana has tapped TANF funds to be used for utility bills. Last year $7.5 million was available through TANF for low-income energy.
