City of Tallahassee Receives Funds to Expand Weatherization ProgramOn March 17, the Tallahassee City Commission voted to use $900,000 to hold education forums about utility rates and expand the city's weatherization grants program, which primarily focuses on improving insulation in low-income homes. The City of Tallahassee, a municipal utility, offers up to $500 to increase the attic insulation in a home. The program had a budget of $25,000 at the start of the year. City Commissioner Andrew Gillum, who is expected to be the city's representative at the forums, said $850,000 will be dedicated to weatherizing homes and hopes that customers take advantage of the program before the expected high summer temperatures arrive. The city also is looking for ways to include landlords and their tenants. "We don't intend to use all this money and exclude our renters," Gillum said. "Our renters are the ones that probably most need this and could benefit from this program. We want to assist renters and hold our landlords accountable for something they should be doing."
