WI Gets $6 Million for Energy Assisstance

Wisconsin’s Governor Doyle announced on March 2 that the state legislature approved $6 million to help households with heating assistance. The legislation also extended the eligibility limit for assistance to 175 percent of federal poverty guidelines enabling a family of four making $33,863 to qualify for assistance.

Gov. Doyle proposed the $6 million emergency energy assistance plan in his State of the State Address and called a special session of the legislature to address the issue of rising heating costs in Wisconsin. Heating costs have increased as much as 30 percent, and utility companies are seeing almost a 10 percent rise in the number of people who can’t pay their bills.

Eligible families can apply at their local county energy assistance office, and will receive a check after May 15th.

The Governor is also working with utility companies to grant an extension to eligible families who bring in documentation that their funding is coming. Under state law, utilities can't cut off residents from November 1 to April 15 if they already are connected.
