HHS Provides $79.9 Million in Energy Assistance

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt on September 12 announced the release of $79.9 million in LIHEAP emergency contingency funds to 14 states. HHS said states received a portion of these funds if they have:

1. 15% or more of their low-income households that use fuel oil for heat and
2. An average temperature less than 47 degrees over their normal temperature for the period of October 1, 2005 to March 31, 2006.

"This assistance will help states prepare for heating costs this fall and winter," Secretary Leavitt said.
