Georgia’s Low-Income Seniors Get Credit

On December 19 the Georgia Public Service Commission approved a $150 credit for low-income seniors’ natural gas bills at a cost of $5.2 million.  The Commission estimated that 35,000 seniors will benefit.

The money comes from the state’s Universal Service Fund. The fund was set up under the 1997 law that deregulated natural gas service and is supported primarily by large industrial customers. The Commission periodically releases money from the fund for LIHEAP-eligible households and/or low-income seniors, including $14 million released during FY 2006.
