Michigan Energy Help Highlighted In Wake of 93-Year-Old's Freezing Death

January 30 -- The U.S. Postal Service Carrier Alert Program and other home energy assistance programs available for vulnerable residents will be the topic of a news conference Friday at Bay City Hall. Home energy assistance programs will be presented by partnership agencies including the American Red Cross, United Way of Bay County and the Mid Michigan Community Action Agency.

The news conference comes amidst public outcry over the recent death of 93-year-old Marvin Schur. Neighbors found Schur frozen to death in his South Chilson home January 17th.  Bay City Electric had placed a limiter reducing electric power to the house several days earlier,  in response to Schur's failure to pay his bills. Bay City has since removed an estimated 60 to 70 limiters placed on other homes where rate payers had fallen behind. 

Schur received a burial with full military honors this week.  Meanwhile, an investigation into Schur's death has been turned over to the State Police. City Manager Robert Belleman says the cause of the sub-freezing temperatures in Schur's home has not been determined. Belleman promised full city cooperation in the case.
